My "Pool School 101" is a personalized, one-on-one training session at your equipment pad. I'm not going to just hand you a confusing manual. We'll walk through your exact system together.
Here’s what we'll cover:
1. The Tour: Anatomy of Your Pool System
I'll show you every piece of equipment and tell you exactly what it does in plain English.
Circulation (The Heart): We'll trace the water from the pool to the pad and back.
Skimmers & Drains: Where the water leaves the pool (the "intake").
The Pump: The "heart" of the pool. It pulls the water and pushes it through the filter.
The Filter: The "kidneys" of the pool. It cleans all the gunk out.
The Returns: Where the clean, filtered water shoots back into the pool.
Sanitation (The Immune System): How your pool kills bacteria. We'll identify if you have a Chlorine system, a Saltwater system (which is still chlorine!), or something else.
Heating (The Comfort): We'll go over your heater (gas or electric heat pump) and how to use it safely and efficiently.
2. The Chores: Your Weekly "To-Do" List
This is your basic maintenance checklist. I'll have you do it with me.
Water Chemistry 101: This is the most important part. We will test your water together. I'll explain the "Big 3" and why they matter:
Sanitizer (Chlorine): Kills the bad stuff.
pH (Acidity): Keeps the water comfortable for you and protects your equipment.
Alkalinity: The "anchor" that keeps your pH from bouncing all over the place.
Cleaning Baskets: I'll show you how to safely open and clean your skimmer baskets and, most importantly, the pump basket. A full basket chokes your pump.
Cleaning the Filter: This is the #1 thing new owners are afraid of.
If you have a Cartridge Filter: We'll open it and I'll show you how to properly hose it down.
If you have a Sand or D.E. Filter: I will show you the "Backwash" process, step-by-step. I'll also show you the pressure gauge—that's your filter's "full" signal.
Brushing & Skimming: The simple stuff that makes a huge difference.
3. The "How-To" Guide: Operating Your Equipment
This is where we flip the switches and turn the valves.
Valves & Automation: I'll explain your valves and what positions they need to be in for "Pool Mode" vs. "Spa Mode." If you have an automation system (like a Jandy AquaLink or Pentair EasyTouch), we'll go through the basic programming.
Running the Pump: I'll show you how to set your timer or, if you have a variable-speed pump, how to set the schedule for maximum efficiency and savings.
Troubleshooting: I'll give you the "Big 3" to watch for:
Air bubbles shooting from the returns (a suction leak).
The pump making a loud, grinding noise (bad bearings).
The pump sounding "starved" or "gurgling" (a clog or low water).
By the time I leave, you'll have a "Pool School" cheat sheet with your ideal chemical ranges, and you'll have the confidence to handle the day-to-day. My goal is to make you the master of your backyard—and to make sure you only have to call me for the heavy-duty repairs, not the simple stuff.
